| A form-fitting plastic license plate cover was fabricated to blend in with the lines of the rear fascia and offer a different visual on the back view of our cars.
The cover is fabricated from ¼” plexiglass, trimmed to size on a table saw. A heat gun was used to soften the blank to about 350’F... The bends were made by hand while wearing gloves. Two or three attempts were necessary to obtain the proper curvatures for a snug fit.
Final fitting of the cover was done by grinding the edges. It hasn’t been determined whether weather-stripping will be required to keep our dirt and moisture. Another option is to modify the attachment mechanism to allow easy access for cleaning. E.g., using a magnet to attach the top edge. For this prototype, the cover is attached using two slip bolts on the top edge; and two metal tangs that grip the bottom edge.
A length of 8mm OD PVC tubing was fused to the top edge of the plastic using Superglue Gel. Two 4 mm metal rods were inserted into the each end of the tubing. Where the rods meet the inside edge of the license plate cavity, a small 1/8” hole was drilled on either side. The metal rods can be pulled out from the PVC tube and extend into the bodywork where they support the top edge of the cover.
The two 1/8” holes are the only permanent modifications to the Z32 body. They are barely visible, and may easily be covered up adding a section of lower body strip tape.
The bottom edge of the cover is held fast by two metal tangs. They are attached to the bodywork using the lower license plate holes. As you can see, the cover edge has been ‘notched’ to provide a tight fit.
It took a little patience to hand form the flat plastic blank using a heat gun. I practiced with a few test pieces to learn how much heat is necessary to soften the plastic, but not cause it to burn or bubble. Once the plastic softens, it is surprisingly easy to work into shape.
The mod is very subtle and in my opinion does not detract from the Z32 classic lines, but rather enhances them. At night, the effect is more pronounced.
As I said, this is a prototype design. I am thinking about adding a little convex curvature to create a subtle bubble effect instead of the flat curve. Also astute viewers will have noticed the stress crack on the lower edge. And finally, depending on how much dirt collects behind the cover, I may need to either add weather-stripping or a quick release attachment design.
I got the idea from viewing pictures of my old ’54 Corvette design. So there is some ‘old school’ to this rice.
